Navratri Festival Snack Recipe

Recipe Tidbits:

The recipe I’m sharing is called Sabudana Khichdi. Sabudana is the Indian name for Sago Pearls.

They make look like Thermocol (polystyrene) but they are actually starchy pearls extracted from the Sago Palm. Totally edible. They have carbs and are neutral in taste. So you can use these pearls in a variety of dishes: from sweet to savory.

Khichdi is simply another name for porridge.

This recipe is a staple religious fasting dish in my home and a lot of other Indian homes due to its easy digestibility, fullness, quickness of preparation during fasting, and gluten-free nature. (Although, I just found out about its lack of gluten—I eat it for the taste!)

On to the recipe!

Prep time: 1 hr.

Cook time: 30 minutes

Note: 1 hour is just for soaking the Sago pearls. But if you do that beforehand, the recipe should take just under 30 minutes to cook.

Ingredients:

1 cup Sago

2 tbsp. oil

½ tsp Mustard seeds

½ tsp Cumin Seeds

3 chopped green chilies

½ inch chopped ginger

10-12 curry leaves

1 chopped Potato

½ tsp black pepper

½ tsp rock salt or any other fasting salt

1/3 cup roasted & crushed peanuts

1/3 cup desiccated coconut powder

Coriander leaves – As many as you like!

Down below is a video for this recipe my mum & I made for her new YouTube channel!

We make short instructional recipe videos of all things gourmet and basic. Our guiding principle for this channel is for me—the absolute novice at cooking—to one day be able to replicate all of her dishes.

On this channel, you’ll find no distractions because we want people to get to their food quickly and easily, without wasting anyone’s time.

So Happy Navratri to those who celebrate. And happy exploration of this culture to those who’re new but happy eating to everyone!
